We have been hard at work planning the convention for 2010. We have all of the excitement from past years with some new ideas we think you will love! Here are a few updates:
JUST ADDED - PRECONVENTION TRAINING SESSION:
Avid Media Composer Basics and Beyond
In this training session, you will learn the the basic editing tools and concepts of Media Composer, and also various ways to edit faster and more creatively. We will dive into effects creations and you will learn how to use tools you never even knew Media Composer had. You will also see how Media Composer works with the latest file based formats from Sony, Panasonic and more. This informative session will have seasoned Avid professionals at your disposal, so come with your questions and an open mind. You will leave this session with at least one new tip or technique which you can use on your next project.
ONLINE REGISTRATION - STN Convention 2010 is open to current members of STN - those who have paid membership registration for 2009-2010. We hope that you have had the time to meet with your classes, decide who will be attending and what contests they each want to enter. Please have all of your information ready when you begin the online registration process.
HOTEL ROOMS. We have a discounted block of rooms at Disney. We request that you stay at Disney since our costs are directly linked to the number of rooms we fill. In order to keep registration at $80 per attendee, we must fill the rooms in our block. Staying offsite puts the burden of these costs onto your peers and STN. At the end of your registration process, you will be provided a link to the hotel reservation form. Rooming changes and cancellations will be required 1 week prior to the convention. Credit Card holds will be charged one week prior to the convention. No last minute cancellations will be accepted so please plan carefully.
BRING YOUR OWN COMPUTERS. Due to the vast variety of requested edit systems and the economy's effect on the donated computer systems, STN's convention guidelines now state that training and contest entrants will bring their own edit system/computer. We have made arrangements with SmartSource Computer Rentals (
www.smartsourcerentals.com - 310-237-5324 - Kim Webb). The cost to rent will be $115. - $200 for the length of the convention depending on your needs.
EDITING AND CONTEST SUBMISSIONS. Contest editing will either be "FREE" allowing students to edit wherever they like, or SUPERVISED, requiring students to edit in designated edit suites. The breakdown was determined by the contest committee and the details will be discussed at the convention. Either way, each contest will have a deadline that must be met.
INTEGRITY. STN supports the concept of integrity in production and broadcasting and therefore will not tolerate any form of cheating. All work submitted for contests must be done by the students who enter the contest and ultimately take credit for it. We have instituted several policies to discourage cheating of any kind. The policy for convention 2010 is to disqualify a school from the possibility of winning any contest if any of their students or teachers are suspected of cheating. This includes coaching, input, assistance, etc. Please advise your students that the Edit Suite Staff and Judges will be looking carefully for indications of cheating. We want all students to have a positive experience and we all want the winning entries to truly be produced by the winning students.
MIDDLE SCHOOLS. We have expanded the number of contests for middle schools. The policy for Convention 2010 is that middle schools may only enter middle school categories and may not enter high school categories.
SWEET 16. Sweet 16 contests will be on Wednesday March 3. There are 5 contests this year: Broadcast Green (for programs 1-5 years old), Broadcast Blue (for programs 6+ years), Film Green (for programs 1-5 years old), Film Blue (for programs 6+ years), and Middle School. Middle Schools may only enter the Middle School category.
COMMERCIAL CONTEST SPONSORED BY HURLEY. STN is pleased to welcome Hurley (
hurley.com) as a sponsor of Convention 2010. In addition to generous support from Hurley, they will be sponsoring the Commercial Contests for both high school and middle school. Students will receive their briefing and then be taken via bus to the Hurley Store in Irvine, about 20 minutes from the Disneyland Hotel. This is exciting opportunity for our students. Chaperones will be available to ride on the bus and stay in the store for the production portion of the contest.
Please enter this contest only if you are agreeable to this plan.
CONVENTION PAYMENTS. We prefer that you pay online with a credit card at the end of your registration process . We will accept checks accompanied by the registration form. We will also accept Purchase Orders but we request that Purchase Orders are paid before or at the convention. We cannot confer trophies to schools that have not paid for convention. Please plan your registration carefully as there will be a $5. charge for changes.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT OF STN --- WE ARE GETTING READY FOR CONVENTION 2010 - MAKING MAGIC!
