#MediaMonday: Teacher Talk Hangout

Good Morning Everyone.

This morning felt like I was returning to school for the home stretch. At the beginning of this semester, I really had no idea what would happen in the first 4 days, much less the first 4 months!

In the last few weeks, I've been coaching students through their finals, which for my introductory students is a broadcast package. Even though I've given the same assignment for years, this year is totally different. In place of Final Cut Pro X and Canon cameras, the students this year have shaky phone footage that they're cutting in WeVideo. The shocking thing is, though, it actually looks good!

In a year where students shouldn't be expected to do nearly as much, I have seen some of the most extraordinary school journalism taking place. These students don't make excuses or throw fits; they get the job done. I cannot wait to see what STN is going to look like in the next four years because honestly, we have never seen journalists who roll up their sleeves and work like these kids.

I just want to talk about the work that my students are accomplishing right now, and I know most of you feel the same way.

So, the topic of this week's email is: let's get STN Teachers together and hang out.

On December 8th, we are having an STN Teacher Talk where we are inviting all of you to stop in and share.

  • Are your students pulling off some cool stuff?

  • Are you overwhelmed with...well, basically everything?

  • Do you have questions about Excellence awards?

  • Want to know more about Fall Nationals?

  • Are you confused about Convention?

  • Do you just want to pour up a glass and chill with other media teachers for an hour?

The link to the teacher talk will be sent out next Monday in my email and also sent on the listserv the day of the teacher talk.

Also, here is a quick tease: watch out Instagram this week for the 12 Days of Christmas Films! These are short video lessons covering the history of 12 iconic Christmas films with discussion topics. You can show these videos to your classes and then hit play on the movie. We hope you enjoy them.

Here's hoping to see you all there!

Talk to you soon,

Josh Cantrell
