#MediaMonday: Apps for Production

Good Morning Everyone,

A lot of conversations have been taking place lately about the best ways to use phones with our production students. I know that I am using phones in a way that I have never before even imagined due to their convenience and ability to travel with the students.

One of the biggest ways that we can teach our students to use their phones as a professional  production tool is to guide them to apps that support the needs of film and journalism professionals alike.

So today's email topic is: Apps for Media Production

Let me start by saying that this is a short list. However, if you are having success with an app, please share a document with the name, description and a link to download it to the Drag and Drop lesson plan folder on the Affiliate Dashboard called Phone Apps

Audio App: ShureMotiv+

This is a fundamental audio app. It is free, offers the ability to monitor audio with headphones, multiple recording formats, basic editing and a clean sharing function. A tool for every journalist and filmmaker. Seriously, download this thing now.

Camera App: Filmic Pro

This is the app that shot the indie film hits, "Tangerine", "The Florida Project" and "Unsane". It offers total control over the Phone's camera, making it feel more like a production camera than an app. While the price tag is a little high ($14.99), the functionality of ISO, F-Stop, and Shutter speed more than justifies the investment.

Interview App: DoubleTake

This app is quite an innovative little fella. This free app (made by the Filmic Team) allows for you to shoot a shot/reverse shot interview with one phone by allowing both the front and rear cameras to record simultaneously!

Prompter App: Teleprompter Premium

Used by news agencies all over the USA, this free app (with upgraded paid features) is perfect for all of your prompter needs. We use this with an iPad mirror prompter in our studio but you can also just have a videographer hold a phone over a camera lens when you are out on a standup and you are made in the shade! Great app that has years of good, stable history to back up its success.

Video Editor: LumaFusion

Okay, this thing is pricy ($29.99) and yes, if it were up to me, I'd have students edit on DaVinci Resolve16 (free) or WeVideo instead of editing on a phone. But, if you absolutely must, check this one out. When you look at it, it looks like a solid NLE. It's got everything that you need to create high-quality cuts, but it is not cheap and, at the end of the day, you are still editing with your finger.

Good luck App shopping this week!

Talk to you soon,

Josh Cantrell
