ABOUT THE CONTEST

This contest is for all of the broadcast journalism programs at STN! As a companion contest to the 60 Second HorrorFest, STN 180 is a timed, length-restricted broadcast contest where schools create a fully-anchored news broadcast show with multiple segments and topics, edited down to a final run time of 180 seconds or less!

Schools may enter unlimited entries at $25/each until registration closes on January 23, 2025. Contest prompts will be posted to the STN website and social media on January 24, 2025 at 8AM PT and students will have until January 31, 2025 at 5PM PT to upload their finished projects. This prompt can include any of the following:

  • An Overall Topic or Theme for the broadcast

  • Shooting Rules (camera orientation, Framing requirements, etc.)

  • Location rules (requiring segments to be shot in-studio, in the field, etc)

  • Segment Choices (different types of news content required for the show)

  • Staff requirements (how many students will be required to appear in the show)

  • Voiceover Requirements (Signing off to a specific script)

All interviews and video footage must be shot during the contest period. File footage, clips from other media outlets, or parts of previous stories not allowed. Still pictures are allowed for backstory. Teachers, advisers, and professionals may not shoot, write, or edit any part of an entry. This is a hands-off contest and must be 100% student-produced.

Each entry will be scored by media professionals, based on years of work experience in the TV/Film industry. Due to the tight turnaround, feedback will no be given in this contest. All contest divisions will attempt to award a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and if applicable up to two honorable mentions. If the entries in a category do not meet the criteria, the judges may elect to award less or no awards at all. Winners in each category receive awards and recognition on all STN social media and the STN website.

All questions and concerns about contests can be sent directly to dave@studenttelevision.com.
