ABOUT THE CONTEST

The STN Story of the Year competition recognizes the top broadcast segments produced by students, which should exhibit strong journalistic qualities, be well-shot, well-reported, and feature strong scripts and information throughout. News stories, feature stories, or any journalistic segment may be submitted. Any story produced for regular programming can be entered, as can any story created for an STN contest during the eligibility period. Film submissions are not allowed.

Schools may only submit one entry at $25/each. Entries are eligible if produced and aired between August 1, 2024 - April 21, 2025 and must be no longer than 5 minutes. You must provide proof of permission if you use copyrighted footage of any kind. Stock photos, stock footage, and clips from other media outlets as part of a news source program can be no more than 10% of the entry.  Schools must email the licensing agreement to dave@studenttelevision.com. Judges are allowed to question your content if they feel it is not in compliance with copyright laws.

Each entry will be scored by a professional with years of experience in the broadcast industry. Due to a very tight turn-around, no written feedback will be given for this contest. There are no divisions and no middle school category for this contest at this time. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, and two honorable mentions. Winners in each category receive awards and recognition on all STN social media and the STN website. Judging generally takes 3-4 weeks to be completed. Teachers will be notified 1-2 days before results are posted.

All questions and concerns about contests can be sent directly to dave@studenttelevision.com.

** Refunds will not be granted after your registration has been submitted. Please plan accordingly. **
